What is it? Despite some positive reviews, the sporty Buick Regal sedan has not exactly whet the appetite of car buyers, so GM is shining the apple for 2014. New under the hood for the Turbo and GS trim levels is a 259-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Base trim levels, meanwhile, will still get the 2.4-liter four-cylinder, but it will be complemented by a mild-hybrid system to improve fuel economy. All-wheel drive is also optional for the first time.
Inside, the instrument cluster and console have been rethought. Exterior changes include a new grille, wing-shaped LED daytime running lamps, and LED taillamps. Along with the 2014 LaCrosse, the Regal gets the voice-activated IntelliLink infotainment system.
What is new or notable? Features such as a blind-zone alert, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision alert, rear cross-traffic monitoring, and pre-collision braking give the Regal a comprehensive safety system.
CR’s take: Fuel economy figures have not yet been released. However, if the Regal Turbo can improve on the 23 mpg overall that we got from our 2012 CXL and still get the 18 percent power boost that Buick claims, it could keep the pace in a fast-moving segment where much of the competition is now posting better numbers.
